How to Reshare a VPN Users Printer on 2008 Print Server for users to print to VPN User?

How to Share a Client Shared Printer?

Purpose: I want users in main office to be able to print to VPN Users Printer on my print Server while she is offline and then jobs go to the Printer when the user is connected VPN. Since only the PC connects VPN not her entire home subnet IP Printing is not an option... Surely there is a way to get a Print Server to Serve a Shared printer? I even tried right from my PC with same results as below but problem is for VPN User even though i have same issue on LAN with print Server...

We have a WinXP Client PC with Shared printer \\CAPA5421\WVMCzPrint1

They VPN in and I can even use \\CAPA5421\ to see the printer listed shared but if I run START \\CAPA5421\WVMCzPrint1 I get error message "The request is not Supported" nothing else... Does not seem to be rights issue since I am Admin credentialed and able to see Shares and C$ of PC.

However I can right click the Printer in my Explorer Window \\CAPA5421\ and connect it... Even lets me Print Test page to user that comes out of her Printer at her home office but it will not show up in Print Management if connected this way... Another words its not on my print server as anything more than a Printer on my logon...

Trying to Add Printers thru wizard it only looks at local Subnet and will not let me type in the share name  \\CAPA5421\WVMCzPrint1

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Hi I have a Win server 2003 SP2 work as a print server for my organization. The print spool has stop working since yesterday. It can be started but then after I open "Printer and Faxes", the print spooler service will stop. Check the event log and I found 2 relevant entries:

Searching resources online and suspect it could be due to a corrupted driver installed. However I have done all suggestion below without luck:

1. Remove everything inside %WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers;

2. Remove every thing inside "%WINDIR%\system32\spool\drivers (except a folder called "color", I cant get it removed);

3. Assigned ownership of spoolsv.exe to administrators, and I'm logging in using administor.

I cannot find print management under administrative tools, not sure does it applied to Win server 2k3. I cannot go in "Server Properties" in "Printer and Faxes" due to the spooler service is stopped. I don't know is there still any place for me to delete the driver that corrupting. I also checked and confirmed that RPC service is "Started" and start automatically.

Appreciate if anyone can provide some clues.

We change one print driver on our print server and clients are prompted to install drivers for ALL canon printers

Hi Guys I have an issue that only seems to apply to Canon printers.

Print server is server 2008 (not R2) and has around 100 printers on it.

We have around 30 server 2008 (not R2) citrix servers that we install all of our required print drivers on, by connecting to different models on the print server.  We get prompted to isntall drivers once, then all users logging on will be able to use the printers withou issue.

If I add a new model of cannon printer to the print server, when users try to use any canon printers at all, they are prompted to install the drivers, which they do not have rights to do.  This is for canon printers, not just the one we added.  If I RDP to the print server then add the printer again, I also get prompted, then when I go to install, clearly no drivers are being installed, but possible some inf file is being updated.

I do not understand the way in which a client of the print server knows a driver has been changed.  Which files does it compare ?

Does it use the oem.inf and the oem.PNF file in the Windows inf directory? There is the whole list of printers in there.

Does the number after oem e.g. we are up to oem27 now need to match between the server and the clients? WHy does this not happen to HP printers ?

I need to find out why this driver install prompt is being triggered if I change any canon printer driver.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The last time this happened the new print driver was for a canon 2880, and the affected printers were ALL canons.

Print Server name sometimes shows up in uppercase, sometimes in lowercase

Hello!
We've got 3 servers (Windows Server 2003 Standard) and I'm seeing some very strange results when adding network printers while using Remote Desktop.

Example:
I Remote Desktop into ServerA.  I add a network printer from \\PRINTSERVERA\PRINTERNAME  and it shows up in my list of printers as PRINTERNAME on PRINTSERVERA.  OK.  That's cool.
Next, I Remote Desktop into ServerB.  I add the same network printer \\PRINTERSERVERA\PRINTERNAME and it shows up in my list of printers as PRINTERNAME on printservera.  Lowercase this time.

The Print Server name shows up inconsistently between servers.  I've check DNS name of the print server.  Print Drivers are all OK.  I've poked through the registry but cannot for the life of me figure out what's causing this.

Any ideas?  Anyone?

shared printer server name is different on two TS servers

Hello

I have come across a strange situation, we have one print server installed with all our printers and printers are deployed from GPO preferences.

there is an issue with one printer, the name of the printer is case sensitive, the printer name is "Printer" appears ok on both servers. the server name however, one server1 is PRTSRV (in UPPERCASE) on server2 is prtserv (in lowercase).

how is this possible? is there any way to change it?

tried changing the name in the GPO setting, both servers are configured with Enable netbios over TCP/IP.

any suggestions?

Hello All

We are deploying w2k3 terminal server with published applications From 2x and i am using Group policy and push printerconections.exe to set up the network printers on the terminal servers at login. This is all working nicely however the printers server name is sometimes connected with a uppercase Letter for the server name to the printer and sometimes a lowercase this is not a problem for the office applications but it is a problem for our erp software. Where can I set the server name to a fixed name either Uppercase or lowercase or even upper and lower case it just needs to be the same on all clients.

Thanks in advance

How can I add additional drivers on Windows Server 2012?

I just set up a print server on a Windows Server 2012 Standard machine.  I have all of my printers set up and they are working properly.  The only problem is that I can figure out how to add a 32 bit driver to one of the printers.  When I go to the "sharing" tab, the "additional drivers" button at the bottom is greyed out.

I was able to add a driver under the "Drivers" section of the Print Management snap, but I can't figure out how to get the 32 bit driver associated with the printer.

Installing Epson LQ-590 32-bit driver on Server 2008 R2 64-bit

$

Hello,

I have a 64-bit server that also operates as the print-server in our domain (Win Server 2008 R2).

In our domain, I have 32-bit and 64-bit machines. For all printers I can install 32-bit and 64-bit drivers on my server, except for the Epson LQ-590 (and the LQ-2090).

I've tried to install the driver by pushing it from a workstation (32-bit) to the server (64-bit), but it doesn't work.

I've tried to copy the 32 bit drivers from a workstation to the server (as described on another thread*) but then I get the error: The given location doesn't contain the driver for EPSON LQ-590 ESC/P 2 for the requested processor - translated from Dutch)

Also Epson doesn't provide downloadable drivers for these printers as they come "in the box" with  server 2008 en Windows Vista/7.

Does anyone has an idea/suggestion on how it can be done?

I found some workarounds online, but the one that "worked" actually installed the printer locally on the workstations. (what I don't want to)

One thing I've noticed is that the name of this printer(driver) is differtent in a 32 and 64-bit Win7. Could this be the problem, as Mr Allan Morris suggests in the same thread* as mentioned above? Cause the printer can work with each driver and it is the standard driver delivered with Windows.
32 bit => EPSON LQ-590 ESC/P 2 Ver 2.0

64 bit => EPSON LQ-590 ESC/P 2

And if this is the problem, what are my options?

Thx for your suggestions!

Can't Remove Printer Drivers in Windows 7 32-bit

On one of our Windows 7 machines at work I am unable to remove any of the printer drivers that are currently installed on it. I have tried to remove them as the domain admin, and local admin with no luck.  The error I get when I try to delete the driver in the print server properties is as follows.

"Unable to remove driver blah blah, Type 3 - User Mode driver. The specified printer driver is currently in use."

There are currently no jobs waiting to be printed on any of the installed printers.

Any idea's?

Hi all,

I seem to be getting the below error while importing printers from a file in windows server 2008R2SP1.

While restoring a print queue from backup, Printbrm.exe (the Printer Migration Wizard or the command-line tool) failed to copy print processor file C:\Users\RANDY~1.COB\AppData\Local\Temp\99B5DAD2-B483-4529-92C5-47C7594A837C\PRTPROCS\Windows x64\winprint.dll to C:\Windows\system32\spool\PRTPROCS\x64\winprint.dll. Error 0x5. Access is denied.
. This can occur if Printbrm.exe cannot locate all files for a print queue, or if the Print Spooler service cannot be stopped during installation of the print processor. If printing fails, manually install the print processor on the destination computer.

I have checked the printer export files against other servers and its working.
I can also add printers manually.

The error alludes to a securioty permissions error which i have check and confirmed that i have access to the both folders.
Im running the import as a Domain Admin.
I have also tried to add the printers in power shell. I get the following errors.

Please excuse the lenght of the but theres quite a few printers.

PS C:\Windows\system32\spool\tools> .\PrintBrm.exe -s localhost -r -f C:\finacleprinters862011.printerExport
Operation mode: restore
Target server: localhost
Target file path: C:\finacleprinters862011.printerExport.
Queue publish mode: none
Overwrite mode: keep existing settings
Queue ACL mode: restore ACLs from backup

Removing a role from a Hyper-V Host machine

I have a Dell PowerEdge R620 server that is configured as a Hyper-V host machine.  It is hosting 5 virtual servers.  However, I had initially set this server up without virtualization, just a physical server with many roles configured:

DHCP, DNS, GC, File and Print server.

I know this is not recommended by Microsoft, but it worked well for us.  I have recently however, purchased more licensing Installed Hyper-V (GUI install) and set up 5 new virtual servers on this machine.  I now have all of the required roles set up across my VM's.

I stripped all of the roles from my Hyper-V host (A Microsoft reccomends.)  So the only roles installed on my host are Hyper-V and File and Storage Services.

My question is, Can I remove the File and Storage Services role from the Host?  Or will this cause problems with my VM's?

Thanks in advance.

Branch Office Direct Printing & Windows 7

Hi

I think the answer to this is no but just to be 100% sure.

Is there any way to enable support for Branch Office Direct Printing from a Win2012 print server to Windows 7 clients - e.g. hotfix, registry fix etc.

Assuming the answer is no, is there any way to get an equivalent result (sending print jobs directly to the printer) without installing the printers on each of the clients ?

Thanks

John

Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Server Job Owner Issue

At the start of the year we rebuilt our server infrastructure from Windows Server 2003 R2 (Enterprise) to Windows Server 2008 R2 (Enterprise). Since then we've had a sporradic/rare unusual issue occur with our Print Server.

Our Print Server is setup fairly simply, it's a standard Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Server, it has print drivers (64-bit) for our Xerox ApeosPort IV 5570 machines, and it runs Equitrac Office 4.2 for printer authentication and follow me printing. The servers that the users are printing from are Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Servers (2 in a Farm).

The issue we encountered first was that in rare instances users printing and picking up jobs from their Follow-Me print bins on the printer would find that a job would be missing. Another user would come along and do some printing of their own and find the missing job in their own Follow-Me print bin instead.

We originally thought that this was an Equitrac issue and worked closely with our printer support reps in an attempt to find the issue and fix it, but after many logs and months back and forth between Equitrac, our print support reps and ourselves we found that the issue wasn't with Equitrac but seemingly from the Windows Print Server itself.

What we found was that in rare instances (Unfortunately it's rare and I haven't been able to replicate it on demand yet) when a user prints a job, the event log for the print server actually shows that the owner of the job was the LAST user that printed to that print server, not the current user.

Our printer support reps found us an article which seemed to fit our scenario perfectly, but the article is only for Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 (Not R2). When we download and try to apply the hotfix (On the off chance that it might fix the issue) it comes up with an error stating that the hotfix is not applicable to this operating system (As expected).

The article referenced above is: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958741

What we're both wondering now (Myself and our printer support reps) is that if this issue has potentially resurfaced in Windows Server 2008 R2 (Being that the article fits the scenario and symptoms perfectly) but has yet to be fixed, could someone assist us to solve this issue?

Limit Printers per workstation / Roaming Profile Issues

Hi...

I appear to be having a problem with limiting where users can print to ( network printers ) on a workstation. I believe the problem might be related to roaming profiles.

Background:

- We are a complete Windows 2008 R2 Domain / Forest

- We have a Parent and Child Domain

- All workstations are Windows 7 x64

I've been trying to limit where users can print to by assigning printers through Global Policies to the workstation. This has proved to be futile as users are still printing to other network printers from workstations that I dont want them too.

In order to trouble shoot this, I removed all the printing global policies I created from the workstations. I updated the global policies on the local machine. I then logged in as an Administrator of the local workstation and removed all network printers on the workstation. I then logged in a domain administrator of the machine and removed any additional network printers that might be assigned to the machine. Afterwards, I logged in as a domain user ( that has roaming profiles ) and when I went to Devices and Printers, it showed me a network printer ( set as default ) that should NOT be on that workstation.

Network printers should NOT follow users. They should be assigned to the workstation only. How can I make this happen?

Thanks... Frank

Can't print from Terminal server 2008 SP 2

Hi there,

I have a user is getting Run-time error 5142 when she is printing from Terminal server. She can print locally fine. She is at a remote office, so the printer is connected via RDP session.

She is using Win7 SP1 on local PC. The printer is Brother MFC-8380DN.

I have checked the printer version is the same as her local PC and re-installed the driver on the Terminal server, but didn't make any difference. I have tried login using my account from her local PC to TS, and I get the same error.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Yan

Network load balancing print servers using VIP issue

Hey there

I am currently in the process of developing/testing a proposed printing environment for our department and have run into a bit of an issue.

We have gone with the approach of have a network based VIP configured on a Cisco device which will forward packets to 2 identical print servers.

The servers are running Windows Server 2003 SP2.

The specs are:
Server1, IP add: 10.1.7.192
Server2, IP add: 10.1.7.193
VIP ip address: 10.1.7.194. DNS record: "printtest"

The issue is this. When I browse to \\Server1\ I can see the shared print queues and can print to them with no issues. The same is for \\Server2\. However when I browse to \\printtest\ i can see the shared print queues but when i try to connect to the printer, i am getting an "Access is denied" error. The same issue is happening for both XP and Vista clients. The exact error message is:
"Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000005). Access is denied"

I have configured "DisableStrictNameChecking" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters with a Decimal value of 1.

I have also tried creating the OptionalNames REG_MULTI_SZ reg key in the same directory with "printtest" as a parameter but doesnt seem to have helped.

I then had the idea that it may be an issue to do with Kerberos authentication so I created a computer object in AD for "printtest" with the option to "Trust this computer for delegation to any service (Kerberos only)" selected but this did not help.

I even tried adding the "Everyone" group to the printer's security but this also failed.

The VIP has been configured to forward to the 2 ip address based on least connections on ports 445,88,135,137,138 and 139. I have eliminated the possibility that it may be a load balancing issue on the VIP side by shutting down Server2 so all packets are directed to Server1.

I have set up Wireshark packet captures on both my workstation and Server1 but havent been able to find anything useful.
Here is the output from my pc im getting when the issue occurs in the form of:

Srcaddr; Destaddr; Protocol; Info

1. 192.168.1.152; 10.1.7.194; SPOOLSS; OpenPrinterEx request, \\printtest\myprinter

2. 10.1.7.194; 192.168.1.152; SPOOLSS; OpenPrinterEx response, Access denied

(where my workstation is 192.168.1.152)

Has anyone got any ideas as to why I am getting this error?

Cheers
Brady

RemoteApp Printing on Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi there

This is my first time posting here :)

I am a Junior IT Specialist at a finance company. We use a central reporting program that is installed on an offsite server. This 'CRBS' server is sitting in the data centre of a company who is sorting out our network.

Our users connect to the CRBS server through RemoteApp. The CRBS program runs on their desktop perfectly but the problem comes in with printing. Try to run the print function through the RemoteApp in the program and it says that no printers have been selected. I have spoken to the developers of the program and they are unable to help me.

Now being a junior I am struggling to understand why it is not picking up the default printer on the client WS.

In the Remote Desktop options, under Local Resources, I have the 'Printers' box ticked, as well as the option on the server to enable the printer (Admin. Tools > Remote Desktop Services > RDP Session Host Config. > Connections > [name of connection]> Properties > Client Settings tab > Redirection)

I have already tried the steps in the link below but have gotten nowhere further

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770631 .aspx (remove the space before ".aspx")

Will anyone be able to help point me in the right direction of what to install/run/tick/kick to get the users to print through RemoteApp?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Good day to you all
