We have two Windows 2008 R2 print servers that are experiencing an issue that crashes mmc.exe (Print Management Console) or explorer.exe (Device & Printers) when trying to open the printer preferences or default settings. Basically, the user interface for the driver is crashing on these servers when trying to open them.
It has something to do with the OS because the same drivers work on other Windows 2008 R2 servers.
The solutions I have tried are:
sfc /scannow - No corrupts reported
chkdsk - No errors reported
Removed printer, port and driver package -> restarted spooler -> reinstalled - crash persists
Stopped spooler -> cleaned spool directory -> started spooler - crash persists
Install all optional windows updates so it is at the same patch level as the servers where the drivers work. - crash persists
