File & Print Server

Hi All,

We are in the process of upgrading our Windows 2008 print servers to W2016. Has anyone been through this process before. Is it just a case of creating a new W2016 server and copying over the print queues?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

Printbrm.exe event ID 46

Hello together,

I have a problem, using the Printbrm.exe, for migrating 300 printers from a print server with the system "Windows Server 2008 R2", to a new print server with the system "Windows Server 2019".

To export the list with the important data, I used the command "printbrm –B –S Servername –f C:\file –nobin" on the server, that runs the system “Windows Server 2019”.

Yesterday, this worked perfectly.

But unfortunately, I realized, after exporting the list, that I have to delete some printers and update one driver, before I can migrate everything on the new server.

Today I wanted to export the file once again, because of the changes.

The export seems to run normal, until the last port was saved.

After that, an error occurred.

I am really sorry, but I don't have the error code at the moment.

There is one thread, answered from “Alan Morris” to the error code, but I cannot find it right now.

I just have the event ID "46" and the text of the error, that said "Printbrm.exe (the Printer Migration Wizard or the command-line tool) failed to place a file in cabinet (CAB) file C:\file while backing up print queues. Error reported: -----. This can occur if the user does not have permission to create a file in the destination location, or if there is insufficient disk space or system resources.”

I couldn’t find a solution, so I tested the export with a second print server, that also runs on the system “Windows Server 2019”.

The same error occurred.

I also changed the destination server to another print server with the system “Windows Server 2008 R2".

After I have done that, the export runs without any problem.

That means, that the problem has to be on that one old print server with the “Windows Server 2008 R2”-system.

To test this, I tried to export the data directly on this source server.

This should also be possible, as long, as I don’t import them.

To export the data, I entered the same command as the one above.

But then another error, with the code “0x80004005” occurred.

I don’t know how I should go on.

Maybe somebody can help me to fix the problem.

Yours sincerely,

Hi All,

Need a help.

Is there any way, we can failover the print queue from one server to another server automatically without cluster. Server 2012 R2 does not have print cluster. Without WIN8 client, BODP will not work. Hence desperately looking for some DR for print server

Migrating print queues from Server 2008 R2 to Server 2016

I have a 2008 R2 server that has 340 print queues shared on a domain.

I am being asked to replace this server with a 2016 server, and looking for advice on doing this, what to avoid, any pitfalls, etc.

If I export using the Print Management tool, export printers to a file, will I be able to import them in 2016 without losing settings?

Why are my printers shared as \\fully.qualified.domain.name\printer-name?

Hi,

I've got a new Server 2008 Standard server that I setup with printer shares that are listed in Active Directory. This server was setup to replace an old Server 2003 print server.

The only minor (but extremely annoying to the client, apparently) issue is that now, when users list printers in AD and install one, it maps to their machine as \\fully.qualified.domain.name\printer-name, instead of just \\servername\printer-name like it used to.  This is making their printer drop-down menus hard to read in certain apps and the users are frustrated.

I've checked my DNS setup and also looked at the shares themselves and see nothing about specifying how the printers are shared one way or another.  Any ideas?

Client Printer Setup

Hi All,

I have just upgrade one of our Print Servers due to Server Sunset. All went ok on the server side and I took advice on this Tech Forum to migrate the printers using the Wizard tool. All good and set-up without any issues.

The question I have is does anyone know how best to do the client side. We are having to link the clients to printers manually. Is there a tool that can be used to complete this task or will we have to do it manually for all the users?

Regards.

Printer Driver Cache taking up 10GB on a Citrix session server

Hey,

I have a windows 2008 r2 standard server that is running as a citrix session server and C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\TOSHIBA\eSTUDIOX\UNIDRV\Cache\* is taking up 10GB on the 100GB drive. From what I have been able to figure out so far is that this is for the Toshiba printer driver.

It seems crazy to me that it would take up this much space. There are folders within the Cache that are from 3 months back. Are these safe to delete? Is there a reason why it is taking up so much space and not clearing up?

Any help would be appreciated,

-Cassese Polzin

Printer settings change depending on wether I execute my app from Visual Studio or from IIS

Hello,

I have an application developed with Visual Studio 2015 that exposes web services and one of them takes care of print a label with a barcode through a Zebra printer.

This printer is connected in the local net and in my Windows 10 is installed properly. And I configured the size of the paper to be 10x10cm.

If I debug my code through VS2015 and I call my web service, the label is printed with the size I configured.

Now, the problem comes when I publish my application to IIS and I try to call the web service. The label is printed but with smaller size (I think this size comes by default in the printer). After some time researching, my deduction is that printer settings are stored linked to my windows user, but IIS is using another printer settings and I don't know why.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks,

Joan

Issues with print server migration

Hi,

I'm trying to migrate around 400 print queues with around 85 print drivers to a new server. The source server is Windows Server 2012 R2, i've tried migrating it both to Windows Server 2016 and 2012 R2 using PrintBRM, but I'm having the same issues on both platforms. It manages to migrate all the drivers and ports, but the queues fails. With PrintBRMGUI i get the following event

"Printbrm.exe (the Printer Migration Wizard or the command-line tool) failed to restore print queue PRINTERNAME. The restore process will continue, skipping this queue. Error: 0x8007007A."

If i run PrintBRM via CMD, these are the errors that shows up in the command prompt

"PRINTERNAME      Error: 0x8007007a

The data area passed to a system call is too small."

"PRINTERNAME   Error: 0x800703eb
Cannot complete this function."

None of the errors really give me anything to look into, I've tried searching for in online but haven't had any luck. Has anybody else dealt with this?

Branch Office Direct Printing - Sizing

$

Hello,
I would have a question to the sizing of the Print Server for Branch Office Direct Printing (BODP). I am about to deploy one Print Server with cca 1400 print queues which will be shared with cca 20 000 users (all Windows 10). All print queues will be configured to use BODP.

I understand technical background of the BODP and it is obvious that it removes the load from the Print Server (no job parsing, no job data will flow through the server).

My concern is about initial distribution of the queues and printer port sync connections when the queues are distributed. At the beginning there will be a login script which will automatically add specific print queue to all users (secure print through print management solution). Users will also have possibility to add queues for specific devices using self service app.

The plan is to use 4-core 16 GB RAM server with Windows Server 2016 for the Print Server. Since the adding of the queues is mainly up to he users I cannot really do the roll-out in batches and measure performance of the servers

The question is if it will be enough to handle queues with BODP for all those users. Do you have any experience with such setup? Any recommendations?

Thank you in advance.

Printbrm.exe fails to import all print queues event ID 81 error: 0x800706BA

I am trying to migrate print queues from a Windows server 2008 R2 print server to a Windows server 2012 R2 print server.   I've followed all the technet articles on how to do this and I get all the drivers, all the ports, forms and most of the printers. The source print server has just over 1000 printers, the destination only ends up with about 680.  The error logged in the event viewer for the printers that have failed to migrate properly is:

Event 81, PrintBRM:

Printbrm.exe (the Printer Migration Wizard or the command-line tool) failed to restore print queuepirntername. The restore process will continue, skipping this queue. Error: 0x800706BA.

I've checked to ensure the account I'm using for the export/import does have full rights for all printers print management, is both local and domain admin.  I can't seem to find any pertinent information on this problem.  Many articles outlining issues relating to cross architecture migrations, x86 to x64, etc, but none of these seem to apply to my setup.  I've tried the export/import several times, and the export list seems to include ALL the printers (including the one that don't end up on the destination print server).

Can someone PLEASE shed some light on this problem, I need to get this 2012/Win8 print server up and running very soon!!

Hello Community,

I am trying to set up Windows Fax and Scan using a fax server. I have the fax server set up on a Windows 2012 R Server and I have Windows Fax and Scan running on a Windows 7 computer. The fax account is set up to the fax server and it says connected. I can see that it is connected because I have WFS running on the server also and can send and receive faxes from there. The problem is on the Windows 7 computer when I try to create a New Fax, I click the "New Fax" button and immedately get a dialog that says: There was an error opening this message. An error has occurred. Any suggestions?

   Thanks in advance,

Hybrid Cloud Print dependency loop/issues

Hi there,

We have issues rolling out Hybrid Cloud Print.

It gives a dependencylock error, when installing it through NuGet.
I tried downloading the DLL's myself, but still it would error out with a MSVC100.dll error.

Also, the official documentation refers to settings in the legacy Enterprise App experience, which is deprecated since this month.

On Reddit there are several people complaining about these issues, so it doesn't seem like an individual issue:

Hi all,

I seem to be getting the below error while importing printers from a file in windows server 2008R2SP1.

While restoring a print queue from backup, Printbrm.exe (the Printer Migration Wizard or the command-line tool) failed to copy print processor file C:\Users\RANDY~1.COB\AppData\Local\Temp\99B5DAD2-B483-4529-92C5-47C7594A837C\PRTPROCS\Windows x64\winprint.dll to C:\Windows\system32\spool\PRTPROCS\x64\winprint.dll. Error 0x5. Access is denied.
. This can occur if Printbrm.exe cannot locate all files for a print queue, or if the Print Spooler service cannot be stopped during installation of the print processor. If printing fails, manually install the print processor on the destination computer.

I have checked the printer export files against other servers and its working.
I can also add printers manually.

The error alludes to a securioty permissions error which i have check and confirmed that i have access to the both folders.
Im running the import as a Domain Admin.
I have also tried to add the printers in power shell. I get the following errors.

Please excuse the lenght of the but theres quite a few printers.

PS C:\Windows\system32\spool\tools> .\PrintBrm.exe -s localhost -r -f C:\finacleprinters862011.printerExport
Operation mode: restore
Target server: localhost
Target file path: C:\finacleprinters862011.printerExport.
Queue publish mode: none
Overwrite mode: keep existing settings
Queue ACL mode: restore ACLs from backup

Does Branch Office Direct printing apply to all eligible jobs?

Branch Office Direct printing sounds great but I have a question I couldn't find the answer to despite reading and searching a lot on the net.

If a printer in print management is enabled for Branch Office Direct (and the various pre-requisites that could cause fall back server side rendering are not triggered), does every single job sent from ANY client end up printing directly or only those deemed somehow to be 'in a Back Office'?  For BrachCache there is a latency parameter that determines if the content should be cached.  Is there some trigger that says clients should print directly or will even local to the print server clients end up going direct if Branch Office Direct is enabled?

Thanks,

Chris Ransdell

Adding a cost centre before printing

Hello there,

We've a Windows Server 20k12 R2 running with all printers mapped in print server, every month I export a report about every print done by users.

I would like to know if its possible add an user input before printing to select cost center.

Any experience with this?

Thanks and regards.
