Using Universal print driver, but shows completely different model and icon of printer

Server 2008 R2, print services role, clients: Win7

I came across a weird problem yesterday. I added a new printer on our print server, when I chose the driver I used the same HP Universal PCL5 driver that all the other shared printers have (I only use the Universal driver for all HP printers). Most of our printers only consist of HP 4000, 4100, 4250, and 4015 (18 printers in all on the server). Once that new printer driver was added, finished the add printer wizard, thenhalf of the printers in the print control panel now displayed "HP Color LaserJet CM2320 MFP Series" and the printer icon of those changed to this color printer. The other half of the printers are displaying the way they did before "HP Universal Printing PCL 5."  When I go to the properties of the printers themselves, under the driver tab, they still show they are using the Universal driver (which is good). So the only changes that got pushed out to the workstations is the icon change and the model. In the Print Server Properties > Drivers tab > I dont see any drivers that match the Color laserjet. A reboot of the server did not yield any changes.

Have you seen anything like this before? This sounds like something Microsoft would have a hotfix for.

Can not add printers that ARE there

Problem: go to control panel - printers and devices. Click Add a printer. Select the printer that I want isn't listed. Add a local or network printer as admin. Add printer using tcp/ip. Enter IP address of printer. Next "contacting printer", "detecting tcp/ip port". "Additional port info required".....wrong!

I have done this on this server many many times. normally it finds the printer and installs the correct driver. This printer is on the same subnet as the server and the server can ping it just fine. I have three other printers the same make and model already installed. This printer was working but on occasion, the server seems to lose track and the normal fix was remove/reinstall.

I went to the server print management in the management console found an error "removing printer" shown for this printer. I deleted said printer from print management and restarted the print spooler......did not help.

Am having this same problem on a printer of the same type on another subnet. Can ping it fine as well.

This all used to work just fine...now what?

I upgraded my server to SP1 last night now none of the printers are showing up in devices and printers.  When I enter the command "cscript c:\windows\system32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnmngr.vbs -l" there is no reply just hangs.  How do I get all of the printers back?

Print Server Audits (How many prints done by individual per month)

$

I have been asked to devise a way to get information from my print server to tell how many print jobs per month a user is printing. I have already found posts regarding using a powershell script in order to pull event viewer info from Event ID's 307 and 805. However, they seem to be for the PowerShell advanced or Professional. I'm trying to not spend a whole lot of time on this, is there any way to get these audits just by using Event Viewer? Has anyone done this in the past?

Thank you,

Darin

HI Support Team,

We have installed 5 Toshiba printers (STD TCP Port) with the latest toshiba printer drivers on a win 2012 Server and shared the printers. The printers are printing the test pages when printed from the server.

But, When we try to connect them from the client, on some clients it displays the error the Printer handle is invalid.

We tried to test by installing a HP Universal Printer and Sharing it. This also resulted in the same error.

We have a mix of Client OS, Win 7 , win 8, win 8.1 and win 10.

Need assistance in resolving the issue.

So the group print management doesn't let the users modify tcpip printer ports unless i add them in the security of the server via print management.

Anyone have any idea how to do that work via command line?

The dialog box where i manually edit it, is below.

I recently updated to server 2016 and setup the fax server role. When I deployed the fax server the incoming faxes are stored in a folder as a .tif file. In the previous fax server 2008 the income faxes where saved as a .pdf file.

How can I change the format of the incoming faxes from .tif to .pdf file format?

I am using a US robotic internal fax modem.

Migrating print server from 2008R2 to 2019

Hello Everybody,

This is my fist time migrating a print server and I'm looking for suggestions on how to go about this.

I'm working on a virtual environment.

I have a 2008 R2 print server and created a new 2019 server with print role installed. We have about 70 printers and use GPOs, My original plan was to migrate the printers from 2008 to 2019 using the print migration tool, then taking the 2008 down and transferring the the name and IP from the 2008 to the 2019 server. But I found a few instruction on google and it seems that I might have issues with my GPOs creating duplicate printers if I take this route.

Any ideas or suggestions will help.

I have a 2008 R2 server that has 340 print queues shared on a domain.

I am being asked to replace this server with a 2016 server, and looking for advice on doing this, what to avoid, any pitfalls, etc.

If I export using the Print Management tool, export printers to a file, will I be able to import them in 2016 without losing settings?

HP p2035 is causing the print spooler to stop working

Hi,

I did a in-place upgrade from 2008r2 to 2012r2 it was successful, but had to roll back to my 2008 VM. But after hours I started the 2012 back up and discovery that the HP p2035 was causing the trouble.

It seems that it is a printer / driver that is bringing the whole thing down.

It was working fine under the 2008 Os but now it causes the spooler to fail in OS 2012.

I went into C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS clear a couple files in there and the spoolerstays  up now

As soon as I tried to print with the HP printer the spooler failed, so I know what it is but how do I fix it?

I could not find a driver for a p2035 for 2012r2?

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a driver that can be used?

This printer is user just to print checks (MICR) so it's a little important :)

We love to hear from you!

Thanks,

Jim

I want to move a 2008R2 Print Server to a 2016 or 2019 Server

I know you can Export & Import your Print Server Info (I have never done this). Will this method import all the drivers, ports, and shares?

This Printer Cannot Be Published

Windows 2008 R2 Server, running Print Services.

I am able to create printers/queues without problem.  If I open a browser and go to \\server  I can see the printers and connect to them just fine.

My next step is to add the printer to Active Directory.  I open MMConsole, browse to the container, right click, select New-Printer, and type in the printer name (\\server\Printer Name).  Upon hitting enter I get the following error.

"The printer cannot be published. To publish printers on computers running the Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 operating systems, use the Printers folder."

This is occurring on new or old print queues.  Doesn't matter what container it's in.  We were able to add printers via this method a couple days ago.  The only change made on the printer server was adding a SSL certificate for Papercut (print paper management software).

Thoughts? Solutions? Ideas?

Is there an official Microsoft printer management and deployment service other than creating a print server and deploying by GPO?Something like PrinterLogic and Printix but from Microsoft.

Is there any way to show what client machines are connected on a windows 2012 print server?

In other words which windows 7 machines are currently using a network printer shared off of the print server?  Something like in computer management where you get to see open files on server.

No printers installed on win10

Hi we have an issue where some users are not seeing any printers listed when they try to print from any applications, not just office.

When we add a printer we get a message saying default printer cannot be set when click finish on add printer wizard.

The print spooler is running, restart doesn't help. Deleting the printer and removing all drivers and packages doesn't.

I have enabled LPR monitor in print and document features. I have created a single test printer on anew print server and still get the same issue - no printers listed.

You can add a printer through add printer in Office but you still don't see it listed.

Some users who reboot fixes the issues where others it don't. The print services are configured to MS best practices.I also noticed that if you go device and printers through control panel and select a printer you do not see any options for printing such as print properties, preferences etc.

I have no idea what else it could be, has anyone come across this before?

Where are the settings for Enhanced Icons in Devices and Printers?

$

I enabled enhanced icons in Devices and Printers on a print server running 2012 R2, which initially worked great.  However, the next day one of the icons reverted back to a non-enhanced icon.  I'd like to refresh this.

I have two specific questions:

  1. How can I force a refresh on the "enhanced" printer icon?
  2. Where are the settings for toggling this feature on and off?  I also want to prevent print drivers from being automatically being updated, which I initially enabled. Now I cannot find the way back to those settings, which initially showed under the menu bar until activated.

Thanks.
